The short version: I’m winding down this experiment of re-publishing Cord Cutter Weekly on Substack. Starting this Friday, you’ll receive the regular, self-hosted version of the newsletter—the one I’ve been running for over seven years—instead.
(If you’re reading the web version of this post and are not already a subscriber, you can sign up for Cord Cutter Weekly directly on my website.)
The long version: I started re-publishing Cord Cutter Weekly on Substack in April, right after the launch of Substack Notes. While I still prefer to self-host my newsletters, I didn’t want to miss out on Substack’s oft-touted network effects, especially if Notes took off.
A few things have happened since then:
Substack Notes hasn’t been the Twitter killer that a lot of media industry folks predicted.
Trying to build a Substack audience takes more effort than I expected, and I’d rather put that effort into building my own audience instead.
More often than not, I neglected to even bother republishing Cord Cutter Weekly here in the first place. (Here’s an archive where you can see everything you missed.)
I may revisit Substack in the future, perhaps in a format other than just republishing the newsletter in full. But for now I might as well officially end this little experiment. No need for further action on your part; you’ll start receiving the regular edition of Cord Cutter Weekly this Friday.
Until then,
Jared
